Video: Korean Sunscreen Controversy: Industry Professional Shares All You Need To Know On The SPF Scandal
The Korean Sunscreen Controversy recently made the headlines around the world. It all started when a Korean sunscreen with a huge following in Europe and America was tested by multiple parties to be less than SPF50, unlike what advertised on the label of the product.
Following the incident, more Korean sunscreens came under scrutiny for failing to meet label claims and this sparked an international controversy on the safety of Korean sunscreens, with people questioning the trustworthiness of Korean cosmetic regulations and authorities. As a marketing professional who works with the Korean Beauty industry, I was especially disheartened to see many turning their backs against Korean Beauty and look down on Korean regulations. It certainly didn’t help that, when confronted with the proof of their shortcomings, most brands involved decided to point fingers at the institutions instead of taking accountability.
Having followed the Korean press coverage of this controversy, and knowing the root cause of the scandal, I found the attitute of these brands extremely unprofessional and unethical so with this video, I wanted to clear the waters and share with you information that was unfairly omitted from the English statements of the brands involved. Plus, I will break down for you how sunscreens are regulated and approved in Korea so next time a company tries to blame their wrongdoings on “the system”, you’ll have the knowledge to call them out on their bs 🙂
Through this video, I hope you can understand that regulations are in place in Korea and that the poor behaviour of a handful of companies are not representative of the Korean Beauty industry as a whole.
