Amorepacific teams up with BASF to develop an innovative UV protection technology to slow down skin aging

Although research into the prevention of photoaging through the use of sunscreens has been approached from multiple angles, the predominant focus has traditionally been on protecting the skin’s surface from ultraviolet rays. However, there is now increasing interest in the study of UVA rays (long-wave ultraviolet rays) which can penetrate deeply into the skin and damage the dermal layer, resulting in the appearance of visible signs of skin aging.

In light of this, Amorepacific’s R&I Centre decided to focus its research on free radicals (the harmful substances generated within the skin by UVA) in order to delay skin aging caused by UV rays. To address this concern, the centre developed an innovative sun protection technology that incorporates a targeted antioxidant system specifically designed to prevent the formation of free radicals when UV rays penetrate the skin.

The company then assessed the effectiveness of products formulated with this technology by utilising RSF (Radical Skin Protection Factor), a tool created by BASF that measures the skin’s defence against free radicals. After a series of technical enhancements to improve the technology’s skin protective capabilities, Amorepacific successfully perfected “UV-R Pro“, an antioxidant UV protection technology that not only delivers robust UV defence but also addresses the main cause of photodamage, effectively helping to mitigate skin aging.

Amorepacific will integrate its new “UV-R Pro” technology across a range of sun care products, beginning with Hera sunscreens in April.
