Cosmax introduces Dandriome™: a microbiome-based solution to combat hair loss and seborrheic dermatitis

Korean cosmetic manufacturing giant Cosmax has announced the successful development of Dandriome™, a new microbiome-based ingredient designed to effectively addresses both hair loss and seborrheic dermatitis.
The name “Dandriome™” is a combination of the English terms “dandruff” and “microbiome” and was chosen to reflect the extensive research conducted on the scalp’s microbial environment that led to the development of the ingredient.
The role of scalp microbiome in hair health
After observing that many individuals experience both hair loss and seborrheic dermatitis at the same time. Cosmax started researching a solution to effectively improve both conditions. The company began by analysing microbial distribution, diversity, function and metabolic pathways of the scalp microbiome, focusing on the differences between individuals with hair loss (both female and male pattern) and those with healthy scalps (the control group).
Researchers discovered that the individuals that individuals with hair loss exhibited lower microbial diversity, a reduced presence of microbes responsible for hair acidification (a process that helps maintain a healthy scalp pH), and suppressed lipid metabolism pathways that regulate sebum production. Cosmax concluded that an imbalanced scalp microbiome may play a significant role in the onset of hair loss and associated conditions like seborrheic dermatitis.
Dandriome™: a microbiome-based solution
Based on these findings, Cosmax identified beneficial microorganisms prevalent in healthy scalps and incorporated them into Dandriome™, a novel microbiome-based ingredient designed to restore a healthier scalp environment.
When applied to the scalp, Dandriome™ has been shown to suppress lipid production factors (reducing excess oil) and hyperkeratosis (an increase in the scalp’s keratin layer, linked to flaking and scaling) at a cellular level. In addition, research has confirmed that the ingredient can effectively reduce the biofilm and biomass of Malassezia, a yeast that overgrows on the scalp and is known to be the primary cause of seborrheic dermatitis, leading to less inflammation and flaking. Lastly, Dandriome™ has also been proven to impact the activity of dermal papilla cells and growth factors, both of which are essential for maintaining hair follicle health and promoting hair growth, suggesting its potential as a hair loss treatment.
A commitment to innovation
A spokesperson from Cosmax stated:
The newly developed ingredient is an innovative material that can simultaneously address hair loss and seborrheic dermatitis, two of the most common concerns related to the scalp and hair. […] We will expand our research into microbiome-based solutions and continue to develop materials and products that lead the global market”
