Kolmar Korea obtains MFDS approval for BASF's Tinosorb® A2B UV filter

In a company statement, Korean cosmetic manufacturing giant Kolmar Korea announced that South Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety has approved the use of Tris-biphenyl Triazine as a UV filter, following the company’s collaboration with BASF.

Tris-biphenyl Triazine, also known as Tinosorb® A2B, is a high-performance broad-spectrum UV filter developed by BASF, the world’s largest integrated chemical company and a leading global supplier of ingredients for the cosmetic industry.

This innovative ingredient works by both absorbing and scattering UVA and UVB rays, converting part of the energy to heat while its ultra-fine particles reflect and scatter the rest for broad-spectrum protection.

Under South Korean law, sunscreens may only be formulated using UV filters previously approved by the MFDS, and approval of a new filter requires extensive safety and efficacy data.

In this case, Kolmar Korea first submitted an application to the MFDS to add Tris-biphenyl Triazine to the approved UV-filter list, and then used its expertise in sunscreen technology to compile the safety and efficacy dossier for Tris-biphenyl Triazine, leading the MFDS to approve it as a UV filter in South Korea. To enhance the performance of the ingredient, Kolmar Korea has also developed a proprietary “UV X-pert Boosting” technology that allows the UV filter to spread evenly across the skin, forming a uniform protective film that guarantees longer-lasting, more stable protection.

A spokesperson from Kolmar Korea stated:

Tris-biphenyl triazine was officially added to South Korea’s approved UV filter list in September 2025 and is now available for cosmetic use in the country.
