LG Household & Health Care uses AI to accelerate cosmetic ingredient research

Korean beauty giant LG Household & Health Care has revealed that it has successfully developed high-performance cosmetic ingredients through the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and plans to launch products formulated with these components as early as next year.

LG Household & Health Care has recently partnered with LG AI Research to develop new cosmetic ingredients using “EXAONE Discovery“, an AI model developed by LG AI Research to facilitate new discoveries in the bioscience sector.

In contrast with previous studies conducted using traditional research methods, which depend on the expertise of researchers and existing academic literature, this new approach was shown to significantly cut the time needed to identify new potential ingredients, reducing it from nearly two years (an average of 1 year and 10 months according to LG H&H) to just one day.

The company found that incorporating AI not only accelerated the research process, but also dramatically reduced research and development costs. While conventional research methods typically require sourcing a wide range of materials and running multiple rounds of testing before perfecting a new cosmetic ingredient, AI can effectively streamline this process and minimise these additional costs.

In the project, EXAONE Discovery was first used to analyse molecular structure data to predict the the properties of potential ingredients and reduce the time to develop new cosmetic materials. Secondly, the AI model also played an important role in identifying and eliminating potentially harmful ingredients from the final selection, making sure that only safe and commercially viable materials were selected for further evaluation.

While other Korean cosmetics companies have previously leveraged AI models to analyse existing raw material data, LG Household & Health Care’s breakthrough shows the potential of AI to shape the entire ingredient development process, starting from the molecular level.

The company now plans to conduct additional research to perfect these new ingredients, with the goal of incorporating them into products under their luxury beauty brand “The History of Whoo” by next year.
